14 September 2010

The UK government has announced the signing of an agreement with Brazil for the avoidance of double taxation of salaries, wages and other remuneration of aircraft crew operating internationally.

The agreement applies to residents of each country and applies solely to individual income tax.

Where necessary the two countriesí tax authorities will be authorized to exchange tax fiscal matters to aid in the administration of taxes, not limited to individual income tax.

The agreement has not yet entered into force, but following the completion of the two countriesí individual ratification procedures, it will, in the case of the UK enter into force for periods after April 6, the year following the agreementís entry into force, and in Brazil, from January 1, in the next corresponding year.

The agreement aims to facilitate increased cooperation between the two countries, both in terms of their aviation industry but also in tax matters. The agreement will benefit aircraft crew in that their income will not be subject to tax in both states, reducing red tape on bilateral flights.
